The history of the Marbella Club dates back to the 1940s, when German Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe-Langenburg decided to convert his private estate into an exclusive beach club and hotel. In its early years, the hotel offered accommodation and club services to only the most exclusive members of European high society, including celebrities and VIPs.
As the hotel expanded and became more popular, the Marbella Club began to attract visitors from all over the world, especially in the 1950s and 1960s, when it became a popular destination for Hollywood film stars visiting the Costa del Sol during film shoots.
Over time, the hotel has expanded and renovated to maintain its position as one of the most exclusive and elegant hotels in the region. Today, the Marbella Club boasts a wide range of rooms and private villas, as well as luxury facilities that include a world-class spa, a variety of restaurants and bars, a private beach and a range of recreational activities.
The Marbella Club’s reputation as an internationally recognised luxury destination has attracted celebrities, influential personalities and tourists from around the world. The hotel has become a symbol of glamour and sophistication on the Costa del Sol, and its history and legacy continue to be an important part of its appeal to those seeking an exclusive, high-quality travel experience.
Before the 1960s, the Marbella Club area was nothing more than a forest that connected to the beach and in which there were a couple of houses of Marbella residents.
These were the main attractions of the town. Sea, mountains and good weather. It was the perfect destination to live or to disconnect in summer.
And that is what Prince Alfonso Holenlohe (the godson of Alfonso XIII) thought when he arrived in the city in 1947 and bought an estate next to the beach. It would later become one of the most emblematic international hotels.
The hotel opened in April 1954, with only 20 rooms, 1 bar and 1 restaurant.
An expansion took place at Christmas 1956, coinciding with the arrival of Count Rudi, who fell in love with what he saw and proposed to Prince Alfonso that they join forces to take the Marbella Club to the top of the international hotel business.
Together, in 1960. They inaugurated what was to be the new phase of the Hotel, with an extension that would have a reception, more rooms and a beach club for the first time.
Count Rudi and Hohenlohe used to organise weekly themed parties, from treasure hunts to fancy dress on the beach. There weren’t many other entertainment options until the opening of the Marbella Club’s discotheque, Pepe Moreno’s discotheque. His establishment hosted celebrities of all kinds in an exceptional atmosphere, including Sean Connery, Philippe Junot – future husband of Caroline of Monaco – and Gunter Sachs, the German playboy who won Brigitte Bardot. At one such party, Simeon of Bulgaria disguised himself so convincingly as Fidel Castro that the Batista family, who were nearby, got a good scare.
Osama Bin Laden, born in Saudi Arabia in 1957, and his family visited Marbella on several occasions between 1977 and 1988, official sources confirmed to Diario SUR. His first resting destinations were the Marbella Club and Incosol hotels.
In the early 1980s, some members of the Bin Laden family began to gain notoriety in Marbella’s nightlife, frequenting nightclubs popular among Arabs, such as Regine’s. “It’s been a long time since then, but yes, I remember we used to call them ‘the sheikhs’, even though we knew they weren’t, but they spent as much money or more than them,” says one of the former employees of this now defunct nightclub.
